Guatemala – where ancient and modern Mayan culture exists side-by-side with the remnants of Spanish colonization. This collection features the ancient temples of Tikal, local markets and churches, and a window into the lives and traditions of Guatemalans.
Wooden masks are an important part of ceremonial and storytelling traditions across Guatemala. Often hand-carved and painted, they are worn during dances, festivals, and religious events to represent historical figures, animals, or symbolic characters. In these moments, the mask allows the wearer to step into a role larger than themselves, turning performance into a shared expression of tradition.
Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is defined by procession, devotion, and shared participation. These images concentrate on both larger movement and smaller details — from intricate alfombras to the collective act of carrying, waiting, and walking together. The photographs capture a moment when private faith and public life converge.
